Who is Roofus Seagull?

May 30, 2006

There is a seagull who lands on the roof of an old victorian building next door to us, and waits for the neighbors to toss him bread crumbs. Roofus is a creature of very specific habits.

He will show up out of nowhere and beg for bread by waiving his head around and making a low clucking sound. Then, during spring and summer he disappears for weeks on end, probably because he is out over the bay, about a mile from here, and gorging himself on anchovies.

Then, when winter comes, he is back, and will sit atop a nearby telephone pole for hours until the bread people come out and throw chunks of bread up on the roof. We say that he is "standing his post" when he does that.
